Palm Springs glamour stems from Depression-era days as an off-the-beaten track getaway spot for celebrities -- many attempting to elude Hollywood gossip columnists while lounging around kidney-shaped pools, party up and dine out more or less incognito. Those nostalgic days may be long gone, yet swimming, sunning, golf, tennis and appetites for diverse dining remain prime pastimes in the still-glamorous oasis of Palm Springs. Growth has brought an ever-expanding line-up of dining options. Cuisines range from long-established Italian favorites dating from Sinatra days to trendy new outposts for steaks, seafood, vegetarian, Indian, Thai, Mexican and French. At least one restaurant in nearby Indian Wells brags about bringing Paris to the desert. The 29 Palms, on the Oasis of Mara, is closest to the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park, and despite an Old West look, the inn’s restaurant has a contemporary chic befitting the overall sophistication of the Palm Springs dining scene.
